Who am I? |
I was born in Winnipeg and I grew up in Transcona. When Transcona got a bit too large for me, I returned to my family’s rural roots in Southern Manitoba. My mother was a librarian and my father was a firefighter, but they were the first to live in the “big city.” My grandparents and my wife’s family are all from rural MB and Saskatchewan with strong farming backgrounds. While I have Mennonite, Scottish, German, and Ukrainian heritage, my wife is Franco-Manitoban/Mennonite, we are a bilingual family, and we champion French culture. Nous sommes très fiers d'être Manitobains.

I identify with middle class workers, small towns, and farming communities. I would not have been able to go to University without working several jobs cleaning bathrooms, bussing tables, and working as a security guard. My mother was the President of her union and I was fortunate to be raised with a strong labour background. Union scholarships helped me get through school, get my B.Sc, M.Sc. and Ph.D, and then become a Professor so I could give back to the communities that shaped me. I am an advocate for our amazing province that has a bright future.
