About Me
My family has strong roots in rural and agricultural Manitoba, living in communities from Sprague to Carman to up through Landmark, Niverville, Erinview and Stonewall. Lorette West is our home. We have three children (with a fourth on the way!) and a fantastic pug named Bentley.
I have been a strong voice for Manitoba and our local community. My message has always been about making a difference in the lives of our neighbours, which means investments in healthcare, education, and making life more affordable. We have to stop the PC cuts to our province and address local needs in Dawson Trail - our roads, rural medicine accessibility, the Lorette Multiplex, 55+ living spaces, sustainable development, our schools, protecting our water aquifer, advancing Truth and Reconciliation. The needs of Dawson Trail have been neglected for too long and it is time for change.
I am a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Winnipeg and a Canada Research Chair in Quantum Materials Discovery. My research focuses on new materials that help our everyday lives, from the iPhones that we use to the MRI machines in hospitals. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a former Leverhulme Professor at the University of Edinburgh, and a former Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR). I was a post-doctoral fellow at Columbia University (New York City) before I was a Professor at Brock University, Florida State University, and then finally back at the University of Winnipeg (after being away for 13 years). Giving back to the University that shaped me, and the community that made me who I am, is very important to me.
